Spotlight on Vital Minerals – Calcium, Magnesium, and Potassium

By A. True Ott, PhD, ND

The brilliant nobel laureate Dr. Linus Pauling emphasized the role of trace minerals in the body as he declared:  “You can trace every illness and every disease to a mineral deficiency. “   Modern science has determined that the human body can produce vitamins through a process called transmutation – but it cannot produce minerals.  In fact, minerals are the basic building blocks that the human cells utilize to manufacture vitamins on the cellular level.

Early research into the various roles trace minerals perform in cellular metabolism identified 21 basic mineral elements that are essential to maintain cellular “homeostasis” or healthy balance.   Top on the “vital” list are the minerals Calcium, Magnesium, and Potassium.

Most every educated American has heard about the mineral Calcium and that it is VERY important to supplement it daily – but many do not know exactly why this is so.  Calcium plays a major role in:

  • Strengthening bones and teeth
  • Regulating muscle functioning, such as contraction and relaxation
  • Regulating heart functioning
  • Blood clotting
  • Transmission of nervous system messages
  • Enzyme function.

Don’t forget that the most important muscle in the body is the human heart.   A lack of calcium in the tissues and cells leads to heart arrhythmias and other irregularities.   Also, without adequate calcium, the blood is more susceptible to abnormal clotting irregularities which of course are the primal causal factors in strokes.   Given that Heart Attacks and Strokes are the biggest killers in America – one should quickly recognize the importance of daily supplementation of Calcium.

Mother Earth Minerals’ pure liquid Calcium supplement is the best choice simply because it is first and foremost ELEMENTAL Calcium (not a chemical compound).  When it is taken sublingually (under the tongue) you are guaranteed quick, rapid absorption immediately into the blood stream.  Calcium Carbonate (Chalk) and other “compound” calcium pills are rarely absorbed adequately in the digestive tract, and as a result – many people falsely believe they have sufficient calcium in their bodies simply because they take a daily supplement pill.

The mineral Magnesium is above all the “heart mineral”.  Magnesium works in harmony with Calcium to promote heart health and vitality.  When Mother Earth Minerals began producing liquid, angstrom-sized mineral solutes to be applied sublingually back in 1995, there was very little information on the role Vital Minerals played in human health.   My book “Wellness Secrets for Life” was mocked by the mainstream intellectuals, – specifically my “anecdotal” research concerning Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium and other minerals exhibiting specific hz frequency signals across cellular membranes (which was the theory of my Phd Dissertation).    Today, even the almighty USDA is echoing my “anecdotal” reports of the mid-90’s concerning the hz nerve signals.  Consider the words of the USDA’s Forrest H. Nielsen in 2006: “Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral element in the human body, following calcium, sodium and potassium. Magnesium enables many biochemical reactions necessary for life. However, much attention has been directed recently towards another role of this element: The movement of electrically charged ions of calcium and potassium as well as organic molecules across nerve cell membranes to transmit a signal.

These roles are important for nerve conduction, muscle contraction, blood vessel relaxation and tensing and thus blood pressure, and a normal heart beat. Epidemiological findings and supplementation trials show that people’s magnesium status is associated with the severity and frequency of migraine headaches, some forms of heart attacks, high blood pressure, sleep disorders and mood disturbances. Carefully controlled human studies at the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center (GFHNRC) and elsewhere are being done to conclusively show that inadequate magnesium intake can result in these maladies.” Source:  http://www.ars.usda.gov/news/docs.htm?docid=10874

Potassium is also an essential mineral element that is known as an “electrolyte”.  Shortages of potassium create a very dangerous condition in the human body called “hypokalemia”  where the heart often simply stops beating.   The excitotoxin food additive mono-sodium glutamate (MSG) binds to potassium, and can lead to hypokalemia – with symptoms of mental depression and low energy often manifest.   Regular supplementation of M.E.M. potassium sublingually often gives you a mental burst of energy and a release of depression symptoms – not to mention preventing a potentially mortal episode of heart disruption via hypokalemia. In short, if you love eating MSG-laden “Chinese Food” and other processed foods – it is a very good idea to regularly supplement M.E.M. potassium!!

Remember, the number one killer each and every year in America is heart disease and stroke.   What this really is telling us is the number one killer is in reality a chronic lack of the minerals Calcium, Magnesium, and Potassium!

According to the American Heart Association (AHA): Mortality data for 2008 show that cardio-vascular disease CVD (I00–I99; Q20–Q28) accounted for 32.8% (811, 940) of all 2,471,984 deaths in 2008, or 1 of every 3 deaths in the United States.

On the basis of 2008 mortality rate data, more than 2,200 Americans die of CVD each day, an average of 1 death every 39 seconds.   Now, that’s just CVD heart problems and not the other AHA ‘category’ called “Coronary Heart Disease” or CHD.  What about strokes?  Add the statistics of strokes and CHD to the CVD stats, and eyebrows really get raised.   405,309 people died from Coronary Disease (CHD) in 2008, and 137,332 died from strokes.   In total, then, 1,354,581 Americans died from CVD, CHD, and Stroke combined.   In other words, 58% (over half) of all deaths in America were linked to heart problems, and strokes.

Is there a need for public education on supplementing elemental calcium, magnesium, and potassium as provided by M.E.M. minerals over the last decade and a half?    You decide!
